Motocross Helmet

A motocross helmet is the most common helmet used when riding off road and in motocross racing events. As you can see from the image, the helmet covers all of the head area and has an extended section covering the chin and mouth area. It also has a sun visor on the face of the helmet.

These helmets don’t usually come with a face visor or shield, instead you will need to purchase a set of goggles that fit over your eyes and the band wraps around the back of the helmet where there is usually a keeper stopping the band from sliding down the back of the helmet. They also usually have a ventilation system allowing you to control the amount of air coming into the helmet.

When buying a motocross helmet, try and get one that has a lot of ventilation ports. Some have up to ten intake and 4 exhaust ports to all sufficient air flow into and out of the helmet. These vents are usually adjustable so you can open and close them as required. Obviously, being able to completely close off all vents when it’s raining is really important.

Motorcross helmet goggles come with various levels of tint or different coatings. You can get basic ones that just provide a basic tint right through to the more expensive models that come with ‘tear offs’ that you can use while racing to get rid of a layer on the goggles and therefore restoring visibility.

Another feature to look out for is a dirt bike helmet that comes with removable internal padding, like check pads and forehead padding. After wearing the helmet for a full day of motocross racing in the middle of summer, even with air vents, the inside of that helmets is going to get pretty sweaty and start to smell worse than you… So being able to take out those internal sections and wash them is going to prolong the life of your helmet and make it more enjoyable to wear.

As with all motorcycle helmets, make sure the one you are considering buying is DOT safety standard approved, or whatever the safety standard is in your country. You should also make sure the helmet comes with a helmet bag as well.

Below we will cover the three different leading helmets in this category, covering budget, average and high end cost. Buying a helmet online is a great way to save some money when you are buying your first helmet or replacing a different one.

Budget

The IV2 (Ivolution Sports) helmet on the right is one of the best selling budget motocross helmets on Amazon. It has excellent user reviews and they have sold heaps.

Ivolution Sports, Inc was born out of a desire to create cutting edge helmet designs that provide top notch performance at a low price and doing it all while looking great! Their helmets are produced in one of the best factories in the world alongside some of the most prestigious brands in the industry.

For under $50 you can’t go past this helmet for price and the features included. It comes with a fully removable and washable interior, great ventilation system and an adjustable sun visor. You should really check it out and read some of the positive owner comments.

Mid Price

The Fox racing V1 motocross helmet is matte black and an excellent choice for a mid priced helmet. Fox is one of the leading brands in motocross racing and very highly respected for the products they produce. This V1 helmet sets a new standard for value, comfort and performance.

It features an injection moulded polycarbonate shell, 3 shell and 4 EPS sizes and comes with 10 intake and 4 exhaust vents for enhanced airflow. The matte black finish is getting some great reviews online and it also has removable internal padding allowing you to wash and replace as you need.

This helmet fully complies with Snell and DOT certifications, weighs 5.6 pounds and is the 2013 model, so you can pick up a bargain as its last years stock.

High End

The Fox V3R Carbon Helmet is one of the better motocross helmets you can buy and has been described as “best in class”. The main feature of this helmet is that is made, at least in part, out of Carbon Fibre and Kevlar. Using Carbon Fibre and Kevlar in its construction means that it is extremely strong but also very light weight, coming in at an astonishing 1180 grams.

It contains a rear venting system to provide maximum airflow through the helmet and also uses a multi-channel internal EPS liner for airflow distribution. As you would expect with a helmet of this quality and price, it comes with a fully removable and washable Coolmax comfort liner and cheek pads.

This is one of the best motocross helmets you can get. Fox have done an excellent job incorporating carbon fibre and Kevlar elements and with some pretty cool graphics you will defiantly stand out on the track.

Sizing

All of the helmets listed above should have sizing and fitting guides on the product page. These will explain how to choose the right size to fit your heads dimensions and shape. When buying a full face helmet you want to ensure a snug fit without it being too tight or without too much pressure being applied. You also need to make sure that the helmet isn’t too loose where the helmet can freely wobble around without your head moving.
